Chicken Maison Chicken Kabob
Today our random meal of the day brings us grilled a Chicken Kabob and a veggie kabob hiding in the background. This was actually not my random meal but my friend's random meal. I'm going to tag these posts as "RMOTD Photographer". The thing about presenting only my meal as the feature item is that it becomes less and less random after more than a year of eating. This way I can showcase more food without the consequences of more weight gain. ;) These are typically the second picture shown on the post.
These "RMOTD Photographer" post are a bit harder because it is not my actually plate of food so I typically only get a couple of shots in before the person wants to chow down. Also because it is not my plate of food, I don't touch it so the way it comes is the way it is photographed. I thank my friends in advanced for contributing to my blog by eating with me and allowing me to photograph their random meal.

Fonda Don Chon Lunch Buffet Sope
There comes a time when a single item redefines your perception of food. Today's random meal Mexican lunch buffet changed my perception of beans. I've have never really been a fan of beans in general. I would eat it by it was always just blah... Most of the time, I would actually just hold the beans. Well, today there was no holding the beans on the Sope. My buddy recommended that I try out the Sope as he said it was really good. Since we were at a lunch buffet, I was like why not. I turned out to be the star of the meal. Every item that I tried was actually full of flavor. This was amazing for a $6.99 lunch buffet, let alone a buffet in general. I was well worth the 20 mile drive.

Eat at Joe's John Wayne Special
Our random meal of the day is the John Wayne Special. This looks more intimidating than it really is. This breakfast was actually my lunch. The John Wayne Special starts with a single corn tortilla as the base. You then add home fries on top of the tortilla. Two eggs over medium with cheese completes the mountain. Sausage is then added to the side as a garnish. Finally this whole concoction is smothered in a Spanish sauce. You have an option to choose either more corn tortillas or some toast to complete the John Wayne Special. I devoured the entire thing.

Random Meal Of The Day one year later
Today is the one year anniversary of my Random Meal Of The Day photo blog. I successfully posted at least one food photo per day for an entire year. The blog started of simple enough.
"Your random meal of the day assignment is:
Smoke House burger, fries, and a Cherry Coke.
Found at Johnny Rockets in Los Angeles, CA."
It was a lazy Sunday after the July 4Th holiday that I decided to start a photo blog about food. Yes, noticed that I said photo blog and not food blog. I was nowhere close to being a foodie. I just wanted to improve my photography and needed a subject that would enable me to shoot more. Well I eat everyday so let me shoot what I eat. Simple enough is what thought.
Well, when you try to shoot at the restaurant location, it gets a bit harder. The first thing to consider is always the lighting. Before, I would just sit down. Now I want to sit with my back or side to a window for better lighting. If I choose the wrong seat, then it makes it that much harder. Lunch is always better than dinner at most restaurants. You get some form of natural light the majority of the time. But there are always exceptions to the rule. There was a funny episode about a pink light bulb or a tinted restaurant windows. A manual white balance is your friend but not always. I started using manual white balance with either a paper napkin or cloth napkin at the restaurants. Then there are always the nothing white on the table. I ended up carry a grey white balance card with me. It is always a struggle with the lighting. I prefer to get it right on location rather than fix it later. That's the Photographer side in me.
Then there is the foodie part. When you shoot food as your main subject, you start to get interested in food. Fast food is fine but if you step it up a notch, the meal presented before you becomes a more interesting photo opp. Presentation is key as I try not to adjust the plate presented before me when I am eating at a restaurant. I am photographing the wonderful artwork of the Chefs before me. Thank you Chef for creating a meal for me. They are the true artists, I am just there to capture the random point in time. As time progress, people started asking me where to eat and calling me a foodie. LOL Just because I photography food and make it my background picture on a 24 inch monitor, it doesn't make me a foodie. But alas, after a year of eating, I became a foodie. I even have a Yelp account now. You can friend request me there and find out my true secret identity. http://randommealotd.yelp.com/ Yelp filled in the gaps to make me a foodie. Funny how I can sometimes describe a dish and the restaurant well enough that people think that I've already been to the restaurant when in fact it is my first time there because I am trying to have yet another random meal to photograph. Thank you Yelp.
Ahh, back to the food. I can't believe how hard it is to try something new almost every day. It will be ohh, this restaurant is good, and then not come back for 4 months. Prior to the random meal blog, I would eat the same place almost every week and only venture out of the norm on Fridays. It was safe and consistent. Now a year later, it feels weird to have the same item twice in one month. Another hard part is that you have to eat the food. Sometimes I just order items off the menu because I know that it will make a good picture. I try to be random but all within my limits. Almost all the main feature pictures are of my meal. Another thing that became interesting is the revolution of my lunch buddies. Now, almost everyone is on a diet. Also they can't handle yet another random restaurant every day. I am now left to fend my next random meal all by myself. All for the glory of the blog.
And yes, I do get looks when I shoot my photos. One time, a couple next to me jaws dropped when I shot my food. My coworker actually explained to them that I had a food blog. Then the offered to let me take pictures of their food. Another time a waiter asked me if I was going to open up a restaurant because I was shooting their food. Yes, I do get lots of stares and the simple "I have a food blog" alleviates the; what the heck is he doing?
Thank you for visiting random meal of the day. I hope I can continue to keep on posting everyday but I really miss some of my favorite spots. I may actually have to go eat somewhere twice in the same week. So random meal of the day may turn into Random Meal at Random Days in the future. I think it will be nice to just eat...
Last year I posted a picture of the Smoke House burger and fries but not the Cherry Coke. Today one year later, the Cherry Coke gets featured.
Found at Johnny Rockets in Los Angeles, CA.

Kyochon Chicken Bulgogi
We have some awesome chicken bulgogi for our random meal today. Funny thing is that I still haven't physically stepped inside a Kyochon yet. I've been dying to go but never seem to make it there. Maybe this is a good thing as I heard fabulous things about their wings. This random meal was actually a takeout meal that was brought to me. This chicken bulgogi is really an excellent meal. It starts off mild enough and then the slow spicy after burn kicks in and "BAMM", the chicken went from 4 stars to 5 stars. Yes, it lives up to its legend. I still remember my friend sending me a picture of this. I wonder if he saw my Yelp bookmark and wanted to hurry me along to try this random meal.
